In 1995, the renowned film director Francis Ford Coppola acquired the property known as Inglenook Chateau and the surrounding vineyards in Napa Valley and founded the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery. Inside the winery is the Centennial Museum, where the history of the two families who created the winery is explained: on one side, Gustave Niebaum — a Finn who made his fortune in Alaska — who founded a great wine estate capable of rivaling those of France, and the Coppola family, made up of Italian Americans, who kept alive the dream of standing out in the world of cinematic arts.
The winemaking tradition in the Coppola family dates back to the Prohibition era, when Francis’s grandfather made wine in New York, a forbidden and low-quality wine, but one that awakened interest and love for this world in young Coppola. Now Francis Ford Coppola enjoys his two wineries and produces wines of great quality, awarded worldwide.
