The Negroni is an Italian cocktail made with gin, Campari, and red vermouth, and it's one of the most famous mixed drinks in the world. As the story goes, Count Camillo Negroni was a great fan of the Americano (a cocktail made with Campari, red vermouth, and soda). One day, he asked the bartender at Caffè Casoni, in Florence, to swap the soda for gin, a drink he had just discovered on a recent trip to London.
To make a good Negroni, combine: 30cl of Campari, 30cl of red vermouth, and 30cl of gin. It's served the same way as the Americano, with ice and preferably in a short, wide glass, with an orange peel. Our recommendation is to choose a good vermouth such as Dos Deus, made in the Tarragona area with small soleras, mostly 5 years old, and aged in American oak barrels from the Cádiz area, along with a good gin — our favorite is Monkey 47, an unusual and exotic gin made in Germany's Black Forest.
Since 2013, the magazine Imbibe has organized Negroni Week together with Campari, held every June, a charity event celebrating the birth of one of the world's best cocktails. Participating bars and restaurants serve the classic Negroni along with some variations on the cocktail, donating part of the proceeds to various charitable projects.
